Halloween is celebrated annually and actually has it’s origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from
‘All Hallows Eve‘. November 1st is All Hallows Day (All Saints
Day), which is a catholic observance of honour of the Saints.
There is a Celtic
story that says that the spirits of everyone who had died in the previous year
would come back in search of bodies to posess. On the night of October 31st
people would dress up in ghoulish costumes and walk the streets, attempting to
scare off the Spirits looking for bodies. This strange custom was taken to
America by Irish Immigrants in the 1840’s.
The custom of Trick or Treating is thought to come from Europe. On all souls day, Christians would go
from village to village asking for soul cake, (bread and currants), in exchange
for prayers.
The custom of carving lanterns
from turnips is thought to have come from a man named Jack who made a deal with the devil and was denied
access to heaven, the devil then double crossed him and wouldn’t let him into
hell. Instead the devil gave him and we hope you have a happy Halloween!
